The Bag Broker is a carbon neutral packaging supplier.

We are proud to announce that starting from January 1, 2022, The Bag Broker is a carbon-neutral packaging company! This means that all the carbon emitted to bring you your packaging since 1st of January 2022 has been offset by investing in climate positive projects.

For us, sustainability has always been a core value. We were the first supplier to launch a biodegradable coffee bag in Europe in 2014. In 2019, we launched a mono-material recyclable bag worldwide. We also joined RedCycle in Australia early on. We are committed to continuing on this journey to make all of our products sustainable however until we can eradicate the non-sustainable resources we use, it is a moral imperative and obligation to account for this.

We started the process with a thorough audit of our carbon footprint in 2021. We did not just consider what we directly emit. We measured every single step in our value chain; from the carbon footprint of office lighting to the environmental impact of our employee’s commute. The result is seen below:

Our total carbon footprint in 2021 was 1355 tons. Raw materials, bag production and logistics constituted 88%. Warehousing, offices, business travel, and commutes took up the rest.

Our next step has been to outline a plan for minimizing our carbon emissions going forward:

  •  Cut air freight, helped by a state-of-the-art system for forecasting customer demand.
  • Devise a plan for bringing down our use of power and water in our offices. We will retire wasteful lighting and appliances and replace them with best-in-class equipment.
  • Design new products with a lower carbon and waste footprint. Over time we replace our product offering with those new product lines.

The above should enable us to lower the per-unit carbon footprint by 20% in 2022.

What we are unable to cut or design away, we will offset. We will at the end of each quarter buy gold standard and Verified Carbon Standard offsets.

Our carbon-neutral status is a core achievement for us. Yet it’s only one stage on our sustainability journey, as we search for new and better ways of reducing emissions and limiting waste. Ultimately, we want to leave our planet in a better state than we found it in.

We invite you to be part of the process. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to contact us at: bags@thebagbroker.com.
